Good to know
AVIF is a newer image format based on AV1, a modern video codec. It's very efficient, so websites use it to deliver sharp pictures in small files, and an image you save from a page may arrive as .avif. Older apps, photo viewers and upload forms often don't recognize it, while JPG opens almost everywhere.
Decoding AVIF depends on your browser. Current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox can do it, and so can Safari 16.4 or later; if your browser can't, the converter tells you, and you can switch to one of those. In the JPG, transparent areas are filled with white, and photo metadata such as GPS location is not carried over.
Questions and answers
Why won't my computer open AVIF files?
AVIF is a fairly new format, and older programs and some image viewers don't support it yet. Converting to JPG gives you a file they can open.
Which browsers can convert AVIF?
Current Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and Safari 16.4 or newer. If your browser can't decode AVIF, you'll see a message asking you to use a current version of one of these.
Will the JPG be larger than the AVIF?
Usually, yes. AVIF is more efficient than JPG, so the same picture takes more space as a JPG; lowering "Quality" a little brings the size down.
